Caesar.

This policy explains how I handle personal data collected through caesar.co.uk and what cookies the site uses. It applies to your use of the website. Personal data I process when providing legal services to clients is governed by a separate privacy notice provided at the point of engagement.

Who I am

I am Geoffrey Caesar, a solicitor regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. I am the data controller for personal data collected through this site.

Geoffrey Caesar

Email: geoffrey@caesar.co.uk

ICO registration number: ZB905094

My ICO registration entry is publicly available at ico.org.uk.

What personal data I collect

I only collect personal data that you choose to give me, or that the site needs to function. Specifically:

  • Newsletter subscribers: your email address, and (if you provide it) your name. The date you subscribed, and your subscription status, are also recorded.
  • Contact: if you email me at geoffrey@caesar.co.uk or use any contact form on the site, I will receive the information you send, including your email address and the content of your message.
  • Technical data: my hosting provider, Ghost, processes basic technical information necessary to deliver the site to your browser, such as IP address and request data, in standard server logs.

I do not run advertising on the site. I do not use third-party analytics, tracking pixels, or social-media trackers. I do not buy, sell, or rent personal data.

Under UK data protection law, I must have a lawful basis for processing your personal data. The bases I rely on are:

  • Consent: when you subscribe to the newsletter, you consent to me sending you the newsletter and related occasional messages. You can withdraw consent at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • Legitimate interests: when you contact me, I rely on my legitimate interest in responding to enquiries and correspondence. For technical and security data in server logs, I (and Ghost as my processor) rely on legitimate interests in keeping the site running, secure, and free from abuse.
  • Legal obligation: I may process and retain personal data where I am required to do so by law, including by my regulator.

Who I share your personal data with

I do not sell your personal data, and I do not share it for marketing purposes. I share personal data only with the following categories of recipients, and only to the extent necessary:

  • Ghost (Ghost Foundation Ltd) — my hosting and newsletter platform. Ghost processes subscriber email addresses and technical data on my behalf as a data processor. Ghost's privacy policy is published at ghost.org/privacy.
  • My email provider (Google Workspace) — for messages you send to geoffrey@caesar.co.uk.
  • My professional advisers, regulators, or law enforcement — where I am required by law, regulation, or court order to disclose.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, appropriate safeguards (such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or an adequacy decision) are relied on.

How long I keep your personal data

I keep personal data only for as long as I need it for the purpose for which it was collected, or for as long as I am required to keep it by law:

  • Newsletter subscriber data: kept for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your address is retained on a suppression list to ensure you are not re-contacted, unless you ask me to delete it entirely.
  • Email correspondence: retained for as long as is reasonably necessary to deal with your enquiry and any follow-up, and then archived or deleted in line with my normal retention practice.
  • Server logs and technical data: retained by Ghost in accordance with its standard retention periods.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • the right to be informed about how your data is processed (this policy);
  • the right of access — to ask for a copy of the personal data I hold about you;
  • the right to rectification — to ask me to correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • the right to erasure — to ask me to delete your data, in certain circumstances;
  • the right to restrict processing — to ask me to limit how I use your data, in certain circumstances;
  • the right to data portability — to receive your data in a structured, commonly used format;
  • the right to object — to object to processing based on legitimate interests, including direct marketing;
  • the right to withdraw consent — where I rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, email geoffrey@caesar.co.uk. I will respond within one month.

If you are unhappy with how I have handled your personal data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator. The ICO's website is ico.org.uk and its helpline number is 0303 123 1113. I would, however, appreciate the chance to address your concerns first.

Cookies

A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device. Cookies are used to make websites work, to remember preferences, and (on many sites) to track behaviour. This site uses only the cookies that the Ghost platform sets to run. It does not use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking cookies.

The cookies set on caesar.co.uk are all strictly necessary for the site to function. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), strictly necessary cookies do not require your consent, but I should still tell you about them. They are:

  • Member session cookies — set by Ghost when you sign in as a member or newsletter subscriber, so the site remembers you are signed in. Examples include ghost-members-ssr and ghost-members-ssr.sig.
  • Admin session cookies — set by Ghost when I sign in to administer the site. These are not set on your device unless you are an administrator.

If Ghost updates or changes the cookies it uses, this page will be updated to reflect the change. You can control cookies through your browser settings; blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent parts of the site from working as intended.

Children

This site is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age of 16. If you believe a child has provided personal data through this site, please contact me and I will delete it.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time. The version in force is the version published on this page. Material changes will be flagged on the site or, where appropriate, by email to subscribers.
