I publish my prices. Fixed fees start at £495 for a contract review, with every price set out below. If what you need is not on the list, I will quote a fixed fee for it, and there is no charge for working that out. I am Geoffrey Caesar, a solicitor of England and Wales admitted in 2008, acting for businesses across England and Wales.

Why the prices are on the website

Because not publishing them is a choice, and it is usually made for the seller's benefit rather than the buyer's. Cost uncertainty is the main reason businesses do not take legal advice they need, and the alternative to a published price is a conversation in which the number depends on how the conversation goes.

So the numbers are here, in full, before you contact me. You can work out whether I am in your range without speaking to anybody. This is a commercial decision rather than something I am required to do.

Every price below is a single fixed fee. It does not move unless you ask for something outside the scope described on the service page, and I would quote that separately first.

Contracts and commercial

Priority turnaround, £395. Add it to any service when you email me. I deliver by the end of the next working day for a review, or within two working days for a drafted document, counted from the later of payment and my receiving everything I need. If I cannot meet it, I tell you as soon as I know and refund the priority fee. How priority turnaround works

If what you need is not on the list

The prices above cover the things people ask for most often. They are not the limit of what I do. Commercial and corporate work does not divide neatly into products, and a good deal of what I am instructed on is something nobody has put on a price list anywhere.

So tell me what you need, in a few lines, and I will quote a fixed fee for that specific scope. The quote costs nothing and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How paying works

  1. Email me. Send me what you need, with any documents, in whatever format you have them.
  2. I confirm the scope and the fee. Usually the same working day, in writing. If a call would help before you decide, I will offer one at no charge. Once you confirm, I complete my checks and send my invoice.
  3. I start work as soon as payment is received. I will be in touch if I need anything further, and I deliver on the stated turnaround, counted from the day I have everything I need.

I do not hold client money. My fees are paid directly to me, and the only money I ever hold is on account of my own costs and disbursements.

Questions about pricing

Do you ever charge by the hour?

No. Everything is a fixed fee agreed before work starts. There are no hourly rates, no six minute units, and no invoice that arrives larger than expected.

What if the work turns out to be bigger than expected?

The fixed fee stands. If the scope itself changes, or the matter is materially different from the information I was given, I will tell you before continuing and we will agree a revised figure. I will not do extra work and bill you for it afterwards.

Why are your prices lower than a law firm's?

The practice is deliberately simple: one senior lawyer doing the work personally, with each service priced for what it involves rather than by the hour. That is what makes fixed fees at this level possible.

Why are you more expensive than the cheapest online options?

Because it is a different thing. The cheapest options are usually a checklist run over a document by a junior fee earner or a template engine. Here, a solicitor of eighteen years standing reads your document in the context of your business.

Is the initial scoping really free?

Yes. If you email me first, confirming the scope and the delivery date costs you nothing, and you are not charged until you decide to go ahead.

Are the prices inclusive of VAT?

Yes. Where VAT applies it is included.

About me

I am Geoffrey Caesar. I have worked on commercial contracts since 2001, first in industry and then in private practice, so I have sat on both sides of the table: as the in-house lawyer who has to live with the contract, and as the external adviser who drafts it.

  • Solicitor of England and Wales, admitted 2008. SRA ID 483394.
  • Practising as an SRA-regulated freelance solicitor under regulation 10.2(b) of the SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations. Practice SRA number 666497.
  • Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and authorised to provide all legal services, including reserved legal activities.
  • Called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 2005.
  • Working on commercial contracts since 2001, in-house and in private practice.
  • Acting for businesses across England and Wales.
  • Professional indemnity insurance in place with a limit of £1,000,000 for each claim, with defence costs in addition. Details on request.
  • I do not hold client money.

Two things you should know about instructing a freelance solicitor rather than a law firm. My professional indemnity insurance is not on the SRA's minimum terms and conditions; alternative arrangements are in place instead, and I will give you the details on request. And you can still apply to the SRA Compensation Fund for losses caused by dishonesty or a failure to account for money. Everything else, including the Code of Conduct, the SRA Principles and the Legal Ombudsman, applies to me exactly as it applies to any other solicitor.
